Job Title: Homebound/Homebased Teacher
Reports to: Supervisor of Special Education and Student Services
Dept./School: Special Education/General Education
Primary Purpose:
Provide general/special education consultation and direct instruction to meet the needs of students eligible for homebound/homebased services who are not being served in the regular school environment due to Medical Certification of need (Homebound) or due to IEP based determinations (Homebased)
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instruction:
- Collaborate with school staff members to provide feedback on IEP
- Participate in school based meetings (as requested)
- Pick up and deliver student assignments
- Implement instructional activities provided by student’s teacher of record, including any modifications/accommodations designed in the instructional plan
- Provide effective instruction that is clear, compelling, and engaging, while considering learning style of the student
- Serve as liaison between the school and home for delivery of instructional services
Student growth and development:
- Monitor student performance to improve student success
- Provide positive and engaging opportunities for student to access materials
- Coordinate the school work of the regular class and the homebound/homebased service so that the student will be able to return to school with the least possible adjustments
Program management and organization:
- Complete reports and paperwork in a timely manner
- Manage materials and equipment effectively
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect student, equipment, and materials
- Use appropriate technology in instructional delivery
- Use appropriate student behavior management techniques in accordance with the student code of conduct and student handbook and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) if applicable
- Consult resources for methods or sources to aid in educating student
- Assist in utilization of books, equipment, and other instructional materials
- Follow all procedures of Charlottesville City Schools for providing services to Homebound/Homebased Services
Communication:
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
- Contact student’s teacher regularly to secure assignments and any special information needed to provide adequate instruction
- Communicate effectively, accurately, and clearly, both orally and in writing, with other professionals
- Collaborate with student, parents, school staff, and other appropriate persons to assist in meeting students’ needs
- Work with families and campus staff to ensure smooth transition of student back to regular school setting
Working conditions:
- Travel within division to homes and other locations of service need
- Carry books and materials
- Manage flexible schedule
- Maintain emotional control in all situations
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree
Valid Virginia teaching certificate with required endorsements
High Need Areas are in Special Education, World Languages and Mathematics
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of core areas of instruction
- Knowledge of students with disabilities
- Knowledge of IEP goal setting process, implementation and monitoring
- Ability to instruct students
- Excellent management and verbal communication skills
- Ability to use modifications/accommodations as stated in plans (504, general education
homebound/homebased committee placement)
- Ability to work with students in crisis situations (acute or catastrophic illness or injury)
- Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
- Skill in working with students who are medically fragile
- Ability to track and maintain accurate data and records
