Summary:

The School-Based Salaried Substitute Teacher is responsible to develop student success in academics, (e.g. reading, writing, language, math, etc.) or skills (e.g. art, music physical education, etc.) by implementing Division approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; implementing lesson plans; modeling the necessary skills to perform assignments; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals. etc.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Reports to the building administrator or clerical assistant upon arrival at the school building. 
  • Reviews all lesson plans and schedules to be followed prior to the students’ arrival. 
  • Maintains the established routines and procedures of the designated school and classroom.  (The substitute is expected to grade other written work not left in the lesson plans.) 
  • Teaches the lesson outlined and described by the absent teacher. 
  • Consults with the administration, team leader, or grade level teacher to get a clear understanding of the schedule and assignment. 
  • Assumes the responsibility for maintaining a positive classroom climate and demonstrates enthusiasm for the teaching/learning process. 
  • Practices and promotes positive interaction with and among students. 
  • Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations and procedures.   
  • Completes the Substitute Assessment Form and leaves it for the regular teacher.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal.

This list of essential functions is expected of all substitute teachers.  Depending on the actual teaching assignment, some functions will be added or altered to accommodate the specific grade level, content, ability of students and documentation requirements.



Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED certificate is required, or has previously worked in Charlottesville City Schools for at least 2 years as a paraprofessional.  Long-term substitutes should have a valid Virginia teaching license.  This minimum requirement does not apply to custodial substitutes. 
  • Must submit a recent (within twelve months) certificate signed by a licensed physician stating the absence of communicable tuberculosis. 
  • Pass a criminal review by the State Police Department and Virginia Department of Social Services/Child Protective Services background check. 
  • Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain good working relationships with students, families and co-workers.  
  • Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices.
  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of office equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, email, and information system applications as well as working knowledge of cloud based applications such as Google drive.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.
  • Proficiency in business English: spelling, grammar, and spoken language.
  • Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns.  Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, co-workers, and the community.

 

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

The usual and customary methods of performing the teaching position require the following physical demands:  significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and the significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally, the job requires 24% sitting, 33% walking, and 43% standing.  The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.

 

Evaluation:

The full-time substitute teacher is evaluated by the principal.

 

Term Length:

Prorated for a 10-month/200 day school year

 

Compensation:

$220 per day prorated for the current school year.  

 

Benefits:  Eligible to participate in the health insurance program, not VRS eligible
