As a part of our School Safety initiatives, the Care & Safety Assistant(s) provide support to our schools and more importantly help to ensure that our students are safe.  The foundation of these initiatives is a commitment to wellness and promoting a positive school culture. This is a 10-month, 200-day position.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Regularly monitor hallways, common areas and all exterior doors to address any unauthorized visitors or intruders, unsafe or unexpected behaviors,  and unsecured entrances.
  • Assist school administration, staff and students to uphold the school’s code of conduct and CCS safety policies
  • Provide assistance/direction to visitors to the school
  • Assist school administration with serious and routine incidents and security matters
  • Build positive, prosocial relationships with students
  • Serve as a liaison between students and school administration
  • Identify situations between students and between students and staff that could escalate into conflict, and engage/intervene to de-escalate
  • Resolve disputes between students using de-escalation techniques, encouraging positive communications and working to minimize conflicts 

Education & Experience:

High School Diploma (or equivalent). Minimum six months related experience working with adolescents in education or community environment. Ability to respond to difficult situations and to take appropriate action in stressful or emergency situations according to Board policies and procedures. Familiarity with secondary school operations and adolescent development. Relationships within the Charlottesville community. Current First Aid, CPR, and other relevant certifications (e.g. UMAB, CPI) are assets.

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Attend all meetings and training sessions as directed. Duties as assigned by building principal.

 

Staff will be trained and supervised in areas such as:
1)De-Escalation/Mandt
2)Mental Health & Stress First Aid
3)Charlottesville City Schools Policies & Procedures
3)Department of Criminal Justice Services Safety Training
4)Culturally Responsive Practices 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge and practice of Culturally and Trauma Responsive strategies and bilingual in English and another World Language preferred. In addition, knowledge and experience in working and sustaining equitable services in the learning environment.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:
Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom; gym, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular Instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members, and parents is required. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
