Job Title: HS Assistant Baseball Coach

Location: Charlottesville High School, Charlottesville, Virginia

 

Job Summary:

  • Charlottesville High School is seeking a dedicated and experienced coach to lead and inspire our student-athletes in support of the head coach. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the development of a competitive and well-rounded program, fostering skill development, promoting teamwork, and instilling a strong work ethic in our student-athletes. The coach will also play a crucial role in promoting sportsmanship, character development, and academic success among team members.

Reports To:

  • Head Coach, Athletic Director, and Principal

Supervises:

  • Athletes and team assigned. Assumes supervisory control over all athletes in the program when such control is needed.

 

Job Goal:

  • To carry out the aims and objectives of the sports program as outlined by the head coach and school administration. To instruct athletes in individual and team fundamental strategy and physical training necessary to realize a degree of individual and team success.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Has a working knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the school board and is responsible for its implementation.
  2. Has knowledge of the existing school district, state, and league regulations. Implements some consistently.
  3. Understand the proper administrative line of command and refers all students' and parents' requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
  4. Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program and school community.
  5. To assist with the supervision of student/athletes before practice, during practice, and after practice and/or games.

 

Administrative Duties:

  1. Assist the head coach in preparation for scheduled sports events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  2. Provides documentation to athletic director needed to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  3. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.

 

Student Related Responsibilities:

  1. Provide training rules and other sport-specific regulations to each candidate.
  2. Supervises practices, games, and team trips. Takes all necessary measures to safeguard each participant. This includes supervision in the locker room.
  3. Directs student managers and statisticians.
  4. Implements school conduct code. Delineates due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary. Contacts parents when a student is alleged to have violated the athletic code.
  5. Accountable to the head coach for all equipment. Collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing, making, and storing of equipment and submits an annual inventory and current records. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment.
  6. Recommends budgetary items to the head coach for next year in his/her area of the program.
  7. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices and authorizes who may enter.
  8. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
  9. Examines locker rooms before and after practice and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility.
  10. Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building, even if custodians are on duty.
  11. Instills in each player respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.

 

Program Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the head coach in carrying out his responsibilities.
  2. Issues press releases and school announcements.
  3. Instructs team members concerning changes in rules. Teaches fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the head coach.
  4. Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering.
  5. Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the head coach of that sport.
  6. Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as outlined by the head coach.
  7. Supervises players before and after practice. Adequately prepare and help players.
  8. Helps in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
  9. Conducts discussions with other coaches in private.
  10. Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the head coach.
  11. Attends contests of other teams in the program when possible.
  12. Performs other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and or that are required by the head coach.
  13. Assists in taking care of playing surface and area for your particular sport.

Qualifications:

  • GED or high school diploma;
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s license preferred;
  • Successful coaching experience in assigned sport is preferred;
  • Must have substantial knowledge and the technical aspects of the sport and at the same time must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.

Compensation:

  • Compensation will be based on number of years of experience.
