HOSPITAL TEACHER (Middle/High School) Primary Focus: English and Social Studies
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Education
- Valid teacher’s certificate with an endorsement in major area of special education
- Minimum of two years of successful public school teaching or comparable experience

Primary Responsibilities
Instruction
- Provides a daily instructional program (based on the Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning) of five and one-half hours.
- Maintains an organized file of each student in the program’s reporting database.
- Establishes contact with the home school to determine the student’s current educational status and to outline an appropriate instructional program during admission.
- Assesses the student’s educational strengths and weaknesses and determines their relationship to medical priorities.
- Assists the student in maintaining assignments from the home school.
- Develops lesson plans and individualized instructional plans based on each student’s needs and curriculum guidelines.
- Refers children with suspected disabilities to the HEP’s School-Based team.
- Serves on the HEP’s School Based team, Eligibility team, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, as appropriate.
- Administers educational/developmental evaluation for students referred by the school-based team for formal assessment.
- Develops, in coordination with the IEP team, an IEP for each child found eligible for special education and related services and, with parental permission, implements the plan.
- Participates in interdisciplinary staffing/patient meetings to assist in the total care of the child.
- Provides medical staff with pertinent educational information.
- Expedites the procedure for homebound instruction.
- Assigns and reports grades to the home school when appropriate.
- Sends periodic progress reports to the parents and home school for an intermediate- or long-term patient.
- Completes reports and forms required at the time of discharge on a timely basis.
- Makes educational recommendations to the home school upon the student’s discharge.
- Provides suggestions regarding adjustments in educational programming, based on the child’s level of performance and medical status, to the home school, if appropriate.
Support
- Consult routinely with the Principal.
- Participates in faculty meetings, teacher meetings, and any other meeting deemed necessary by the Principal.
- Assists in developing objectives of the hospital teaching program.
- Organizes and participates in extracurricular events/activities that support students' educational, social, and emotional needs and allow children with disabilities to participate with their age-appropriate peers.
- When appropriate, participate in in-service programs for the faculty, school division special education teachers, and hospital staff.
- Interprets instructional program to hospital staff, parents, public school division personnel, and others.
- Provides in-service/staff development to appropriate groups upon request, with the approval of the Principal.
- Participates in external activities, organizations, and educational programs to further personal and professional growth.
- Acts as a cooperating teacher for practicum students.
- Assumes other assigned responsibilities as necessary for effective educational programming and overall program goals.
Evaluation
Conducted by the Principal according to procedures established by the Charlottesville City School system.
