POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

 

POSITION TITLE:         Reading Specialist Long Term Substitute 

 

 

FLSA:                            Exempt Professional

 

QUALIFICATIONS:                 

  • Valid Virginia Teaching License or eligible to hold a VA teaching license.
  • Master’s degree with an endorsement as a reading specialist
  • Leadership and organizational qualities which include the ability to facilitate teams, communicate collaboratively, train and lead others, and coordinate data.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the Response to Intervention (RtI) process, at-risk supports, and literacy development.

 

REPORTS TO:             Building administration

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  December 2019-March 2020

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:      

 

To provide the strategies and support on effective instructional and behavioral practices related to the specific needs of each child, based on a Response to Intervention (RtI) framework.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provide research-based, direct instruction in small intervention groups for the majority of the workday.

  2. Facilitate the coordination of school-wide and individual student progress monitoring data

  3. Train building staff on the research-based interventions

  4. Assist building administration in reviewing data to develop and assist in building level professional development. 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Support the total school program by observing curricular and extra-curricular student activities.

  2. Exhibit dependability and punctuality in assigned duties.

  3. Strive to improve professional competence.

  4. Display appropriate personal and professional traits that exhibit a positive role model for students.

  5. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

  6. Strive to achieve the objectives and expectations of the Teacher Performance Evaluation Plan.

  7. Maintain a caseload of students receiving instructional interventions as determined by building administration.

  8. Attend Intervention Specialist meetings 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Knowledge and practice of Culturally Responsive Teaching strategies required and bilingual in English and another World Language preferred.

 

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom; gym, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular Instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members, and parents is required. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
