Job Title: Social Worker

Summary:
The Social Worker is responsible for performing specialized support in an educational setting to
enable students to achieve optimal learning using expertise in trauma-informed care, mental
health, and counseling. The Social Worker collects, interprets, and synthesizes information
about students’ attendance, community environment, family dynamics, economic differences,
and significant crises that influence academic and behavioral success to create intervention and
support plans.


Essential Functionss

-Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary assessment team assigned to each school and

works as a team member in developing intervention plans and planning programs to meet
student need

-Gather background information on student social histories by conducting behavioral

observations, making home visits, conducting interviews, and reviewing school records
-Implement age appropriate interventions and materials to address student needs from plan
including counseling
-Monitor provided student interventions and communicates progress to school team
-Create a student attendance program to reduce truancy, prevent dropout and increase
graduation outcomes by providing interventions and supports to students, teachers, and
families
-Train education staff in truancy/attendance-related prevention strategies, trauma
awareness and needs of students
-Serve as a resource to teachers and staff regarding social work services and the
academic/social needs of students
-Conference and provide information and support to parents/guardians of students
-Conduct specialized individual and group counseling sessions to address specific
emotional, social, and behavioral needs of students

-Serve as a liaison between the student, home, school private counseling facilities and
community resources such as social services, court services, and family service agencies
-Provide follow-up support and periodic re-evaluation services as necessary
-Make court appearances to present data and performs court-requested evaluations

-Maintain accurate case records
-Perform any other related duties as assigned by the school principal or supervisor


Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Possess the ability to collect, interpret, and synthesize information about student histories,
community environment, family dynamics, economic differences, and significant crises that
influence academic and behavioral functioning; demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as an
interdisciplinary team member and devise an appropriate service plan for referred students and
their families; ability to synthesize and interpret diagnostics and assessment data is required as
are excellent communication and time management skills; establish and maintain effective
working relationships with community agencies, students, families, team members and others;
have access to transportation for home visits, court visits or any other need for meeting the
requirements of the position


Education and/or Experience:
Master’s Degree in social work and meet the Virginia Department of Education
licensure eligibility requirements for School Social Worker are required.


Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:
Duties are normally performed in an office and school environment. The noise level in the work
environment is usually moderate. A social worker must exhibit manual dexterity to operate a
phone; enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed materials with
or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on
the phone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms and
on the phone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach
overhead.


Evaluation:
Social workers are evaluated by the building principal.


Contract Length:
10 months (200 days) unless an extended contract is offered.
