Walking bus staff serve as part of the school crossing guard program and provide essential safety support for the walk zones around schools. Staff support traffic safety and develop positive relationships with students on their routes to and from school. Walking bus staff guide and supervise groups of elementary students walking to and from school on a designated path. Safety and student weather supplies are provided. Staff meet at the corner of Monticello Ave. and 6th Street at 7:15am for the walk to Clark in the morning. Staff meet at Clark at the Belmont Ave. side doors at 2:20pm in the afternoon for the walk back to Kindlewood from school. The walk is approximately a half mile each direction, and staff are paid for a full hour each time they report for duty. Job Responsibilities
- Develop constructive relationships and good rapport with students and the community to assist in ensuring the safety of students crossing the streets;
- Monitor traffic flow to allow for the safe passage of children across streets;
- Escort students across streets, stopping traffic as necessary;
- Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students;
- Report unsafe student behavior to school officials.
- Employ the appropriate tools and equipment, including lights, flags, and hand signals
Education and Experience Requirements:
Experience working with school-age children is desirable. Any combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of methods and techniques to assist people crossing busy streets. Ability to work independently and in compliance with department policies and procedures.
Physical and Working Environment:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking distances up to 1.25 miles; standing for prolonged periods of time; use of hands and arms for signaling; ability to lift and carry 10 pounds; ability to pull 80 pounds; ability to see in the normal visual range and hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Field environment; exposure to heat, cold, moving objects/vehicles, noise, inclement weather conditions; work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Physical stamina.
