Job Title: New Pathways Academy Alternative Education Teacher

 

Location:  Boys and Girls Club - Cherry Ave.

 

Reports To: Chief Academic Officer

 

FLSA Status: Exempt 

 

Summary

The New Pathways Academy Alternative Education Teacher is responsible for leading, planning, and teaching in the New Pathways Academy (grades 7-8).  This position will formulate and interpret policies and procedures and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

 

Essential Functions

  1. Works collaboratively with secondary teachers, administrators, parents, school and agency counselors and related service providers in the overall educational plan for students enrolled at the New Pathways Academy. 
  2. Leads the development and implementation of an individual education service and transition plan for students enrolled in the New Pathways Academy.
  3. Leads transitioning students who have attended the New Pathways Academy back to the comprehensive school setting.
  4. Facilitates the virtual learning (EdGenuiity) instruction for students.
  5. Instructs students in a program of study which meets stated objectives and prepares students to master grade level standards.
  6. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction and to actively engage students.
  7. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors.
  8. Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.
  9. Communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress.
  10. Participates in various student and parent activities.
  11. Coordinates the development, implementation, and revision of the curriculum for alternative education with the Chief Academic Officer.
  12. Assesses and identifies program needs and provides recommendations regarding future equipment, alternate programs, and personnel requirements.
  13. Evaluates the New Pathways Academy to ensure that program objectives for student achievement are met.
  14. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in an applicable field. A valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching Certificate is preferred. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work: 

The usual and customary methods of performing the teaching position require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and the significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 24% sitting, 33% walking, and 43% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions. 

 

Evaluation:  The teacher at New Pathways Academy is evaluated by the Chief Academic Officer. 

 

Contract Length: 10 months/200 days unless specified to include a different number of days
